“The Family Tradition” – what does it mean?

It is the name of children’s folklore ensemble. It came into being quickly and simply. It all begun in a family of musicians and, gradually, as often happens in life, the circle of people of kindred spirit began to extend, and a family ensemble turned into children’s public organisation named “The Family Tradition”. It raison d’etre is people’s wising folk musical instruments, introduction to Russian history and culture, an opportunity to try oneself in a folk theatre and, certainly, in dances and songs which once were sung by adults and children alike.

During five years of its life the ensemble received diplomas and prizes in different competitions, and, what is even more gratifying in our opinion, it gained the love and appreciation of the audience. We attribute this first of all folk songs and dances which convey the rich experience of Russian popular culture accumulated throughout the centuries. The author Alexey Tolstoy summed it up in saying: “Folklore is not only the fruit of popular leisure-time, it is people’s dignity and wisdom”.

In these five years “The Family Tradition” ensemble has toured in Italy, England, Germany, France, Poland, Israel and several Russian cities. All our performances found response in the souls of our listeners, and even of those who do not know Russian. Obviously, Nikolas Gogol was right in saying: "…the greatest treasure of these (Russian) people is their songs!”
